Zimbabwean award-winning short film Freestate has embarked on a world tour which has seen it viewed at 11 film festivals so far.
Freestate won the IIFF International Images Film Festival of Zimbabwe Best Zimbabwean Film and Best Sound in 2013 and is produced by Zimbabwe’s renowned Film/Theatre Producer Daves Guzha and Canadian director Martha Ferguson.
The 11 minute feature film has now been viewed at more than ten film festivals such as The Cannes Film Festival: Court Metrage – Short Film Corner, SOHO International Film Festival, New York City, Raindance Film Festival – London England, LA Shorts Film Festival in Los Angela California, Cinequest Film Festival – San Jose ( Silicon Valley), California among others.
The film was short principally in Zimbabwe’s Vumba area in Eastern Highlands and the cast include Zimbabwe’s film guru Steven Chigorimbo and Kevin Hanssen.
The film is a contemporary love story which recounts a special relationship between a single woman and her married Driver, highlighting the cultural hurdles that surround them. Michelle, ‘Martha Ferguson’ a successful TV producer, has been working as an expat in the country for seven years. Single and in her late 30’s, she falls in love with her driver, John, Steven Chigorimbo an older, married man who loves the romance of the old Westerns, with cowboys saving the good people from the ‘baddies.’
