Musings of the emotional

Why couldn’t you love the way I needed to be loved?
Why couldn’t you love me with tenderness and patience?
Why couldn’t you love me with understanding and complacence?
And not with hastiness and defiance?

Why couldn’t you love me with truth and honesty?
Why couldn’t you love me with honour and propriety?
Why couldn’t you love me with purity and chastity?
And not with rashness and curiosity?

Why couldn’t you love me for the smiles and laughs?
Why couldn’t you love me for the sunshine that love brings?
Why couldn’t you love me for the present and not what was held in promise?
Why couldn’t you love me for me?

Why couldn’t you love the way I wanted… needed to be loved?
So that maybe today mine wouldn’t be a memory awash with regrets
And due dates for debts unpaid
But one filled with happiness and laughter over tears un-cried
And heart wrenching trials untried
Because you would have agreed to unconditionally stay by mine side
