Pumula-Based Heart of Oark was last week crowned the winners of the 1st Edition of the Southern Region Division One Women’s Soccer Tournament after drubbing Sobukhazi Stars 5-1 in the finals played at Northlea High School on last Saturday.
Having finished fourth in the league Heart of Oark went on to beat a spirited Sobukhazi in a match that was characterised by hard tackling and heavy rains.
In a closely contested semi final, Sobukhazi dismissed ZRP Bulawayo Central 5-4 on penalties to book a place in finals.
While Edmore Sibanda lead ZRP was sent packing, Heart of Oark closed all avenues for a possible come back by the league champions Magwegwe Stars, winning by 1-0.
Heart of Oark coach Evans had this to say:
“It was all about hard work and building confidence to those players so that they believe in themselves, and if you do that they play with an objective, a goal to fulfil.Women Soccer is not easy it needs a lot of patience, tolerance and courage. They played their hearts out.”
Speaking at the closing presentation, Regional Chairperson Takundwa Chimundiya thanked Skies Sports for partnering with the region in organizing the historical tournament.
‘On behalf of Southern Region Woman’s Football and Sporting Community at large thank you very much to Skies Sports for partnering with the Southern Region and marking a very special day indeed in our football calendar.
He went on to challenge the corporate world to support the girl child.
Adding to that, he bemoaned lack of sponsorship, politics in the national board and lack of professionalism within the clubs as the challenges that they face as the Zimbabwe Women Football Southern Region.
Indeed the Regional Chairperson is right, as Dr Ngozi, the Nigerian Finance Minister, once said investing in women is smart economics, while investing in girls is smarter economics. Lack of sponsorship is underpinning women’s soccer development.
The top goal scorer Bridget Murengwa, netted 6 goals an average of 1 goal per match. While the dribbling wizard, Mitchel Sibanda from SobukHazi, was awarded the prize for being the most valuable player of the tournament.
