One may ask what is a ventriloquist? while some may tell you names like Jeff Dunham,Edgar Bergen,Paul Winchell and South African Conrad Koch as some of the most popular Ventriloquist’s. As the future looks bright we have been blessed with a game charger in Bulawayo and a lover of art who also involved with theatre, dancing and writing. Chik Aljoy the Ventriloquist. Star Trek gets a one on one conversation with the talented youngman.
What is a Ventriloquist?
It’s an act of stagecraft in which a person (a ventriloquist) changes his or her voice so that it appears that the voice is coming from elsewhere, usually a puppeteered “dummy”. The act of ventriloquism is ventriloquizing, and the ability to do so is commonly called in English the ability to “throw” one’s voice.
Tell us About Yourself?
Am Aljoy Anesu Chikowo born in Zimbabwe spent my teen years in South Africa as a participant at Hillbrow Theatre,me joining theatre was more of a calling back in 2012 but then i needed more i wanted to be on TV and so forth, but my director Gcebile Piliso Dlamini told i wasn’t ready for TV.
How did it all start?
I turned to Google for some information that i didn’t get at the theatre and while doing this I came across Jeff Dunham’s work and i just loved it.So i started working on being like him, with no one’s help but the internet. As time went on I became good in my craft, with all the help from my Director Gerard Bester a theatre Guru I managed to do my first performance at Hillbrow Theatre’s Fun Day and from then Lindiwe Matshikiza recognised me and helped my craft become better she linked me to South Africa’s top comedians Nina Hastie and Pule Skhothane whom today I proudly call them my mentors.
In 2014 with the help of Conrad Koch I survived to the 2nd round of SA Got Talent.Since then i have flawn Zim’s flag high in SA comedy.
In 2014 I came back home and worked with Simuka Comedy and I have to admit the love I got was amazing and thanks to Simba the Comic King and Doc Vikela while I was in Harare I met Nando Van Moyo the founder of Umahlekisa Comedy Club who loved my work and dragged me to the Bulawayo Comedy Game.
Who is your Inspiration?
I would say Jeff Dunham is my inspiration and Khanyisa Bunu,I like her saying Mabahleke Abantu which means (let the people laugh).
In short I would say am what i’am because of Art,I respect Art and keen to learn more.
What Can We Expect From You?
The world must expect more “jahneh dysFUNctional” moments as i fly Zimbabwes flag higher am targeting international since am the Zims First Ventriloquist.
When did you create your Puppet?
I created it myself on 26 December 2013 I created it because I didn’t afford to buy one, because puppets are expensive as i was not able to buy i made mine. I named it Alson after my Brother. My father is a tailor and i guess that tailor background played a role in creating Alson
Thank you Chik Aljoy for the interview…
