A female band also called a girl group although the terminology is not universally followed is a music act featuring several female singers who generally harmonise together. Examples of such groups include Spice Girls, Destiny’s Child and the One Stand Band from Bulawayo Zimbabwe.
The 1950’s saw the emergence of female bands in the US,UK South korea and Japan. However these bands seemed not to have staying power. Even today, the issue still prevails. Female groups fade easily due to various factors.
One of the most common reasons why feamale bands fade easily is age. As they grow older the band member priorities change. Some get married and settle down where’s others find themselves out of careers because the industry mostly prefers younger girls.
FRESH JUICE LAUNCH
Record labels move to the next “fresh” band. Some groups lose relevance to the public eye as they would have initially attracted a type of audience which follows their appearance more than their talent and credibility. Therefore girl groups should be particualr about their package and target market which will help them create a fan base which will relate to and grow with them.
According to Michelle Madau Manager of the One Stand Band a female band the reason why female bands fade easily is that most of the vocalists tend to pursue solo careers which at the end of the day consumes their time and takes priority which makes the band suffer.
One fails to balance her commitment to the band and also a solo carreer, she also stated female bands fade easily if there is no one to manage them .One Stand Band is still constant even through two of its memebers Qeqeshiwe Mntambo (Who recently Lauched a solo jazz career) and Novuyo Seagirl (2015 Star Brite Winner) have launched solo careers because it has a strict manager who makes sure that the bandis not neglected.
When asked the qualities which a female band should have so as to last longer in the industry. Michelle said that the individuals should have passion for the Art,trust and team work. These were the same sentiments shared by Tymon Njiba of Great Stars an all male accapella group. He also said that if female bands want to last longer they should know their purpose for singing in the first place. According to him lack of passion is a recipe for disaster.Communication love and belief in each other’s talents and abilities also counts.
Suprisingly there is a thin line between the sucess of male bands and the predicament of female groups for the qualities which make a group last longer are the same irregardless of gender.
Female bands should practice patience and learn to understand each other’s characters. When need arises they should take a leaf from their male counterparts and resolve their conflicts without much ado like the spice girls.
