Personally,l think one of the biggest mistakes an artiste can ever do yikungena ngeheart. There should be a difference between passion and emotion.
Emotion”s should be channeled in the right direction and limited to where it counts. For example in the delivery of an act on stage or recording.I don’t refuse, sometimes Art is frustrating and Artistes can not help but vent out especially about the Kalawa Homecoming.
Like it or not, rant or not,l will use the term Bulawayo Musicians as it consists of the majority of artistes and it makes it easier to express our collective thought and also to metaphorically represent the struggling minority musicians from Zimbabwe for l believe that our struggle is theirs also.
The Kalawa Homecoming is always embraced with mixed feelings, especially concerning the Musicians. Some have gone tribal, some have gone biblical, some have gone economical and most of my fellow Bulawayo Musicians have gone, well eh emotional whereas the audience can’t wait to put on their dancing shoes and adjust their selfie sticks, its the festive season for crying out loud.
As an artiste from Bulawayo,it hurts really,to be sidelined from such a big event and the selected few are much honored. However my fellow musicians let us not forget that as much as we are talented,Art is also a business.Sometimes we should look at things from the promoter’s point of view. His main mission is to make profit from the event at the end of the day and he will go with what sells and ultimately what the audience wants!
I remember in high school when we learned about advertising in commerce.they taught us about branding and extensive marketing. They even told us that the consumers are most likely to buy a product they have heard of,a product that is familiar and most of all a product that is mostly talked about.
In 2016 who has been the most talked about Artiste in Zimbabwe? Biggy Mann,Mdara vachauya…there is no need to name them.As for the supporting acts from Bulawayo l foresee the list and l was hoping that by this time of the year artistes like Mzoe 7 would be filling up Elite like Kontrol Tribe….pause and rewind…yes the way its done in Mr Bean’s videos…Why Mzoe 7?
some may ask.Well because l have been seeing his name in almost every poster marketing a big show not these little shows we organise for ourselves no,l mean well marketed shows with well established artistes.l personally believe that we as Bulawayo Musicians stunt our own growth to a certain extent.
l have nothing against Gagagugu and l respect his grind. However, with the exposure he has been getting, l feel he has surpassed the Supporting Act stage. He should be headlining his own shows now and steadily building his audience.
A factor we tend to overlook is that when we curtain raise for these big acts,we are only getting exposure we are performing for a borrowed crowd.A crowd which came for the main act…get my drift? In Ndebele we say ikhuba lomnikazi aliqedi ndima…thats what curtain raising does to us.That is partly why we do not fill up venues
Maybe we are not thinking out of the box,or maybe we are and our limited resources limit us to the box..Hameno..Let me ask,Why the out cry about the Kalawa Homecoming and its line up of acts? Was not the same venue available all year round or we all want to be part of Oskido’s legacy which he built himself and is lucky to enjoy its fruits in this lifetime.
Get angry,go AWOL. Truth is the economic, political and social situation in Zimbabwe is not in favor of us! Embracing that does not turn one into a tribalist or what, instead it makes it easier for us to understand and cope with the fact that fame and fortune in Bulawayo is mostly by Windfall and God’s favour, not only talent and hard work
Since 2014 Cal_Vin is still the most recognized rapper from Bulawayo and Asaph is trying in the mainstream media but out of how many equally talented and hardworking rappers in Bulawayo? The scale is not balanced. Not even by a quarter!
Take a look at Trykun Shirati, the Zolo hit-makers. Their song is trending in the streets, its played at parties and in almost every Commuter omnibus yet the Artistes are still struggling (l seriously hope they are part of the Kalawa homecoming line up)
Maybe one other culture we need to cultivate as artistes is familiarizing ourselves with statistics nje. For instance the tribe which dominates in our very own City of Kings! One will be very much surprised.
Who threw cans at Cal_Vin at the Castle Lite Block Party ‘achiti anoda mangoma?’Why do you think Winky D and Jah Prayzah are being roped in?Who do you think comes in numbers to support them? Shine your eyes! AnaMaSivanda azere kuNkulumane are not exactly of a Ndebele background.
However, let us look at the positive side of things.Skies Metro FM,our very own commercial station is going to give us a chance in airplay.Let us not wait for a promoter to spot us and promote us.Let us do what we always wanted to do when we get airplay.
As closing remarks beautiful people,l am neither expert in Art nor critic,l am just flexing my ‘critically analyse’ muscles we used to tackle in A Level Literature back in high school and l dare speak my mind...(ezihlabelela uskelem khiye okaKadder)
