If you’re a Zimbo, I’m sure you’ve more than once uttered the phrase “bomber jacket,” but pronouning it, and I will spell it n Ndebele, “ibhombha jacket,” despite the fact that the last “b” in bomb is always silent. I called it a bhombha jacket until I was fifteen and became an avid viewer of Fashion Police on E!. Anyway this blog is not a lesson on how to pronounce the words of borrowed languages like English. Yes, you guessed right, it’s about the bomber jacket (and as I type this I’m feeling very eloquent and puffed up because I’m pronouncing it well lol).
The bomber jacket is this season’s staple, from cyclone Dineo to cyclone Aniel, we have to keep warm, but that doesn’t mean our style should take a backseat. Officially called an aviation jacket, a flight jacket or a bombardier jacket, this trend can really transform a dainty, fragile, girly look into a “kick-some-butt, but yeah I’m still pretty” look.
Pair it with a floral dress or a very soft texture, like a lace or silk ensemble, or even a fairy pastel color; and you will have yourself the most beautiful juxtaposition of the hard-core military vibe which the bomber jacket exudes, with the divine delicacy of the soft dress beneath the jacket. I would finish it of with a sexy pair of two-inch, four inch, six inch ankle boots (whatever rocks your fashion boat) as an up-do; or a pair of Fenty’s (Rihanna’s sneaker line by Puma, and yes, still in) a pair of Airmax or even a nice pair of Bata Tommy’s or All Stars for an everyday look.
Mixing and matching unexpected textures and looks is the “bombest” thing you could ever do in your fashion life. It is fun, it is creative, it is innovative…Girl, don’t be boring. Rock your bomber with the best outfit in your closet.
Originally designed as a uniform to protect the French and Belgian air force in World War I from the harsh cold that entered the open cockpits, the bomber jacket can also be rocked with a simple denim skirt and shirt, for a preppy school girl look, or you could even buy the smaller crop-version if it’ chilly but not cold, like Rihanna.
However, I favor the over-sized bomber like the one Kylie Jenner is rocking, with a jumpsuit. Whichever way you choose to wear this staple, it is a guarantee that you will be very trendy, or let’s be corny and say you will be the “fly girl who is the bomb.com.”
