Despite the chilly weather last Saturday and a number of events that were lined up across town a number of teenagers turned up for the Byo Teen Fashion show which was marred by controversial episodes. A New Luveve teenager duped models and Bulawayo industry fashion expects. The fly by night teen event organiser went AWOL on the day of the show leaving some of her colleagues in shock as she vanished with the little proceedings that have been made before the show.
The unsuccessful event, which was a mastermind of teen model Jemima Mandemwa, was meant to take place at Hope Centre and was to run from 2pm to 5pm. Mandemwa who had invited some of Bulawayo’s renowned fashion designers such as Litso designs, Nkosi Nkomo ,Penelope Keys designs and Samzah Creations. The designers who had all come out to support the young stars had hoped that the success of the event meant the future of the fashion industry was brighter. She had also invited some of the designers to bring they brands and dress some of the models who had paid her money to be part of the run way models team.
Speaking to our news crew designer Annie Maliki said at times that’s why it’s hard for some of the industry gurus to support initiatives by young people as they can go dubious at any minute and leave a bad impression about other young people doing well industry.
As the organiser, Jemima was meant to pay the models, fix the runway ramp, bring in the PA system and ensure that the event was running smoothly. However, instead of at least delegating these tasks to her organising team of two other teens, who requested to remain anonymous, she instead took up all of these duties, including all the financial dealings, and then disappeared on the day of the event.
In addition, she had asked a member of her team to contribute financially towards making the event happen, and the young lady panic-stricken, feared she had been defrauded, and had to constantly respond to the “Where is Jemima?” questions. Mandemwa also vanished with the money teens had paid to watch the show; she had also made some models pay her money with promises that she will arrange with her mother who happens to be tailor in the city to design some top gear outfits for them to use for the show. All the models were in shock as Mandemwa was unreachable.
When phoned, Miss Mandemwa said she couldn’t make it to the event as she was babysitting and so her team would have to figure out what to do. I cant make I’m baby sitting at home , so my team should figure out what to do I cant leave the child alone my mother will be mad at me. After those sentiments she dropped her phone and later on she was unreachable.
It is fraudsters such as Jemima Mandemwa who clothe the arts and fashion industry under a blanket of unreliability to the rest of the public’s eye. For this reason, they must be exposed and held accountable said one model who was in tears as she explained that she had borrowed the money she used in giving Mandemwa for the outfits, with hope that they will be paid after show and she will the reimburse the money.
Eventually, as an alternative to the runway show, a photoshoot session showcasing designs by the renowned designers took place. However, this happened at a corner of the venue, and those who had paid to come for the show never saw anything.
