With the mention of the gospel group “Vocal Ex”, or the popular group band “The Outfit”, let alone the impressive backing vocals that graced the recently ended Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards; one’s mind quickly dashes to the outstanding vocalist that is Mimmie Tarukwana.
Judging from the previous works that have involved the songstress, it is without doubt that her name has slowly become a household name within the Bulawayo music industry. Her sultry, yet captivating voice, has left her amongst the favorite soulful singers known to this city.
At 24 years, she together with her other band members from “The Outfit”, have already shared the stage with African greats like Oliver Mtukudzi, Judith Sephuma and Hugh Masekela, as well as American band “The Huntertones”, something other artistes twice her age and experience only dream of. Locally she has had the chance to be backing vocalist for figures such as Takesure Zama and Lorraine Maplanka-Stot.
It is clearly outlined that using her talent Mimmie is building a ladder to the top and continues to rise. June 8 2018 marks a different Chapter to this rise as the songbird releases her much awaited single titled KHETHA (which means choose in Ndebele) featuring yet another talented and acclaimed DJ/producer, Reverb7.
The conversational song focuses on a woman who is asking her man about the direction that the relationship is taking (something most ladies can relate to) and has a harmonious sing along to it.
Mimmie says she met Reverb7 through a mutual friend and immediately musical sparks flew in the air.
Complimenting the DJ/producer she says ‘he is such a talented producer and I’m privileged to have worked with him’. With the amount of talent these two possess it is no secret this song is going to be on rotation in most people’s playlists, that much it is guaranteed.
Although it is not the first time we have heard Mimmie on our radios (she has featured in various singles with artistes like De Lukes and Sam Siwela), Khetha is part of a solo project that she is working on and is due to drop soon; something which the singer says we should anticipate.
We can’t wait for some more serenades from the cantora but in the meantime here is KHETHA enjoy.
