Talen Vision lifted the John Landa Memorial Cup at Luveve Stadium on Sunday afternoon, after stunning the 2018 ZIFA Southern Region Division 1 Champions Hwange FC.
The McCarthy “Ganda” Dube inspired goal led the “golden boys” to clinch their first silverware in the regional league.
Talen Vision Football Club head coach Mkhuphali “Mr Cooper ” Masuku heaped praises on the young striker for his goal scoring prowess in the John Landa Memorial Cup.
The forceful striker scored a hat-trick in the semifinals to kick out Tsholotsho and continued his scoring form to the finals, netting the winner in the 76th minute.
His persistence in pressuring the Hwange defence paid off, when he dispossessed center back Houdlucks Kaunda and fired past a stranded Charles Sibanda in goals for Hwange.
Dube whose 2018 season was hampered by injuries is ironically the only player to find the back of the net for Talen Vision the whole tournament.
Masuku was amused by Dube’s heroics and jokingly remarked that the tournament be renamed to McCarthy Dube Cup. “Credit goes to McCarthy, his goals won us this tournament, maybe next year they should call it the McCarthy Dube tournament.”
Overall “Mr Cooper” was happy that his team had found some consolation in the 2018 season in which they finished third. “I’m happy for the Talen Vision family ,it’s been a very long season, but at least we have won a trophy.
“Hwange won the league we have won this cup (John Landa Nkomo Memorial Cup) so it’s something good for us. ” Added Mr. Cooper
Chipangano coach Nation Dube had only a few words after the match and seemed disappointed. “This match gave me the opportunity to assess my fringe players and now I know whom to keep and whom to let go next season.”
The Landa John Nkomo Memorial Cup was sponsored to the tune of $5000 by Liquor Hub. Talen Vision pocketed a floating trophy and a cool $1 600 while the losing finalists Hwange walked away $600 richer.
Losing semifinalists Tsholotsho and ZPC Hwange each pocketed $300.
