The 2007 political situation forced Amakhosi Theatre Company to disband after the then government banned Cont Mhlanga’s political satire play “The Good President”.
After a 12 year hiatus Amakhosi will this year re-launch its theatre production and performance unit as a fulltime repertory theatre company. The newly relaunched theatre outfit shall be known as Amakhosi Theatre Rep. This is part of efforts by the new management to revive the performing arts institution.”
The closure of Amakhosi impacted negatively on the growth of the theatre industry in Zimbabwe, we are excited that Amakhosi Theatre will bring back professional theatre seasons and tours deep into our communities”, said the Head of Production Mr. Thulani Mbambo in a media statement released yesterday.
Amakhosi Theatre Rep will be relaunched on March 27 as part of this year’s World Theatre Day Celebrations at Amakhosi Cultural Centre. In efforts to get new talent that will compliment the new outfit, Amakhosi is calling for aspiring actors to audition on Saturday 23 February at the centre. The auditions will start at 11AM and end at 5PM.
Amakhosi Theatre was established by the prolific Cont Mhlanga in 1980 and its productions and tours were very popular locally and internationally.
