The Basketball Union of Zimbabwe Zone Two qualifiers came to an end at Khanyisile Sports Centre on Saturday, with the confirmation of the four teams, each for the women and men to represent the region at the National Championship set for Mutare.
Zone Two consists of teams from Bulawayo Basketball Association (BBA), Midlands Basketball Association (MIDBA), Masvingo Basketball Association (MIBA) and Matabeleland North.
Unfortunately, Masvingo and Mat North teams could not make it for the qualifiers.
BUZ Competitions President Ignatius Yesaya was impressed with the quality of basketball displayed by all the teams at this year’s qualifiers.
“Compared to previous years, this year the competition was a bit stiff. We have seen some surprises especially from Gweru sides like Falcons and Midlands State University.”
Bulawayo will be represented by defending champions and current log leaders Mavericks, Highlanders B and Giants in Mutare while in the women’s category Mavericks, Highlanders and Lakers senior, who reached the finals of the National competitions last year will represent the city.
BUZ is on a mission to create a national league, however, due to financial constraints, this is the closest they can get into making sure that only the top teams make it through to the National Finals.
Teams from Zone Two will now face teams from Zone who also had qualifiers running concurrently.
The draw for the National Championships was done last week in Bulawayo.
