An official statement regarding the nomination turndown by South African based kwaito music guru Oskido and the Bulawayo film production company Multimedia Box for the production “Another Wedding” has been released by the Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards organisers.
The statement comes after Kalawa Jazmee rejected Oskido’s nomination at the Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards saying he does not qualify for the gong.
“RoilBAA acknowledges Oskido’s sentiments about the awards, especially the fact that he does not qualify for a nomination since he is South African. The judges and the awards committee respect his decision and will abide by it.” said the organisers.
The organisers highlighted that the particular award can be won by anyone, Zimbabwean or not, whose work has impacted on Bulawayo’s arts scene.
“Oskido’s nomination was based mainly on the impact Kalawa music and Kalawa Homecoming shows have impacted on Bulawayo’s arts scene. This is what the awards wanted to celebrate. But as we have said above Oskido has every right to opt out of the nomination list since the awards are merely a celebration, and not a force matter.”
The RoilBAA organisers also used their statement to shed more light on the withdrawal of Another Wedding from the nominees list, which now leaves Daniel Lasker’s “The Man” as the only nominee in the Outstanding film category. The Zambezi Magic Commissioned “Another Wedding” was officially released two weeks ago on the channel.
The statement also thanked the arts community and Bulawayo citizens for supporting the awards.
At the beginning of this month we announced our nominees. The list has nearly 150 nominees. All of whom the judges believe did well and deserve to be on the list.
After the announcement of nomination there were concerned about why Ezakomatshelela was the only television production on the list. It is so because it was the only production submitted and in terms of effort and standard quality, it qualified for a nomination. On sitting down the judges were quite aware of the economic condition artists are working under. The judges were also aware that film is a specialised sector which requires resources and proper skills. ROILBAA acknowledges the effort, resources and skills invested in the production and is happy to be celebrating this effort. On film sadly the committee announces official pulling off of Another Wedding from the nominees list.
Meanwhile the RoilBAA are a month away. Dubbed the biggest dress up event in Bulawayo tickets for the event are already on sale at National Art Gallery in Bulawayo Studio 10. The event is on 29 June at ZITF Hall 4 .
