Afro Jazz Musician Bekezela has teamed up with eighteen other musicians from across the African continent for a new song titled “Phumelela”, the song is co-written by Mgcini Nyoni, Innocentia, Bekezela and various artists who featured on the project.
The song was done in response to the Coronavirus pandemic which is currently wreaking havoc and has left over three million infected globally.
“The song speaks to the enduring spirit of human beings and how we will overcome the current problem as we have overcome other problems that have come and gone over the centuries of human existence,” read a statement from Bekezela music.
The statement added that although the song is motivated by the current COVID 19 problem, it is not specific to coronavirus.
“COVID 19 has come at a time the world is facing multiple other problems that include poverty, war, unemployment and other diseases that have been a problem to humanity since time immemorial.”
Zimbabwe, South Africa, Malawi, Botswana, DRC and Nigeria are the six African countries that have artistes that have collaborated with Bekezela on Phumelela.
The project could have had a number of musicians taking part, but due to the lockdown that is effective in most countries, only those who stay close to studios or have home studios contributed to the song which will be released on Friday 1 May 2020 via the Bekezela Music YouTube channel.
